Many of my non-Asian colleagues have a hard time wrapping their heads around this question. On the flip side, when conversation turns to the topic of face with my Asian colleagues, they sigh and say, \u201cFace issues make conflict so complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quoting a common Chinese saying, Li Jun described face to me as an essential element in Confucian culture: \u201c\u6811\u6d3b\u4e00\u5f20\u76ae\uff0c\u4eba\u6d3b\u4e00\u5f20\u8138,\u201d which translated means: \u201cA tree lives because of its skin; [without skin, it is naked]. It\u2019s the same for a person: a person cannot live without face.\u201d<span id=\"easy-footnote-1-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"0\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-0\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Among the Christians I interviewed in China, there was wide agreement that face often influences the start of a conflict and can keep a conflict from being resolved. So why does face have such a profound impact on conflict?<\/p>\n<p><em>Face<\/em>\u00a0in the Chinese context refers to each individual\u2019s perception or awareness of their own reputation in the eyes of others. This perception then forms the basis for their personal sense of integrity, honor, shame, prestige, and dignity.<span id=\"easy-footnote-2-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a style=\"box-sizing: inherit; background-color: transparent; color: #b22029; text-decoration: none; touch-action: manipulation; overflow-wrap: break-word;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"1\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0In Chris Flanders\u2019 book,\u00a0<em>About Face: Rethinking Face for the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Century Mission<\/em>, he describes face in a broader context: \u201cFace is about the pervasive human attempt to establish a sense of worth and meaning (\u2018esteem\u2019) and to find acceptance (esteem that is \u2018social\u2019).\u201d<span id=\"easy-footnote-3-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a style=\"box-sizing: inherit; background-color: transparent; color: #b22029; text-decoration: none; touch-action: manipulation; overflow-wrap: break-word;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"2\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-2\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Simply put, a person feels they possess face when they have the perception that their reputation is intact; they feel solid and respected in their identity; and they feel accepted and socially affirmed as having value to others and their community.<\/p>\n<p>Behaviors related to conflict and reconciliation that in a Chinese context are culturally understood to cause loss of face include 1) someone critiquing or pointing out another person\u2019s fault or mistake in the presence of a third party, and 2) personally acknowledging a mistake or being wrong. Su Lijuan explained the sensitive face challenges of having a fault pointed out when someone else is present:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\n<em>If there are only two of us, I might more readily accept you pointing out my fault. But when a third party is added to the dynamic, I definitely will counterattack for the sake of my face. Even if I clearly know that what you said is right, I won\u2019t admit it and will even strike back. You might feel baffled thinking, \u201cI was doing this for your benefit! Why have you responded like this?\u201d The conflict then develops. Actually, the root cause of the conflict has to do with face.<\/em><span id=\"easy-footnote-4-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"3\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-3\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Zhang Wei also described how, despite being Christians, face issues still make it difficult for him and his wife to admit being wrong:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\n<em>Even though we both are believers, it seems that in our subconscious we can\u2019t allow ourselves to be wrong. If I\u2019m wrong, then there is something inside that involves face. In reality, if you\u2019re wrong, you\u2019re wrong; it doesn\u2019t matter. But to be wrong, especially in front of someone you don\u2019t know, this is a big deal. It\u2019s not easy, and you end up burying a seed of a grudge; you set yourself up for a future problem, a storm.<\/em><span id=\"easy-footnote-5-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-5-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"4\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-4\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>People often experience their perception of their own reputation in the eyes of others as being damaged if they admit to being wrong about something.<\/p>\n<p>Socially speaking, for many in a Chinese context, preserving face at all costs is a cultural norm. Even as a Christian, the pull to preserve face is very strong for Zhou Na:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\n<em>China has a saying, \u201c\u6b7b\u8981\u9762\u5b50\u6d3b\u53d7\u7f6a\u201d [translated as \u201cOne will go through hell for the sake of keeping up appearances\u201d or \u201cOne will puff oneself up at one\u2019s own cost\u201d], meaning, for the sake of face, a person will commit a lot of sins, or bring a whole lot of trouble on oneself. Truly, sometimes I just can\u2019t set face aside.<\/em><span id=\"easy-footnote-6-45646\" class=\"easy-footnote-margin-adjust\"><\/span><span class=\"easy-footnote\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/resource-library\/blog-entries\/an-elephant-in-the-room-face\/#easy-footnote-bottom-6-45646\" data-hasqtip=\"5\" aria-describedby=\"qtip-5\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With an obstacle such as this cultural norm blocking the way, reconciliation becomes nearly impossible to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Yet God directs believers \u201cif possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all\u201d (Romans 12:18), so Christians must grapple with face and its impact on our relationships. There is no way around this issue. In our conflict resolution conversations, conflict coaching, and mediation help, face is sometimes the elephant in the room\u2014if never acknowledged and addressed, reconciliation is hindered.
